Pingoscope's Top Hosters of 2012

by Administrator3. January 2013 15:53

Let's look back at the year 2012 and see what hosting companies could deliver good uptime. When you run website there's a lot to care for, and the last thing you want is to experience a hosting failure. Your site can be well built and properly managed, but your visitors won't feel it if you have shaky hoster. Solid hosting company is a good base for successful website.

For all we know, nobody monitored hosters so long with such a short check interval as we did. We've been watching websites of these hosting providers for more than half a year and we caught every outage they had. There's matter of measurement accuracy though. We can't catch every second of downtime, checking interval is one minute. Also some of the outages could be maintenance related and maintenance isn't really an outage. So we believe it should be fair to set accuracy of our uptime measurement to ±0.02% - it's about 10 minutes per month or an hour per year.

Of course you can say that checking hosting company's site isn't the same thing as checking clients of the company. But usually hosters run their sites using their own infrastructure, at least large ones. So if hosting company's website fails couple times a month, it's unlikely you can count on better service for your own sites.

Ordered by average outage time in case of equal uptime.

Actually, the only company without outages was WebHostingPad, we didn't notice a single failure of the website. Codero had one outage for 7 minutes and they've got 99.99517% uptime, but since we round uptime to two digits after decimal point, 99.99517% became 100%. So that's why both WebHostingPad and Codero get 'Pingoscope Reliance Award'.

Many companies nowadays remove their uptime guarantees, we think that's not a good sign. Also, there's new "green" trend - instead of saying "100% uptime" they say "100% wind energy". Here is some guarantees we could find on hosting providers websites: WebHostingPad - 99.9%, Codero - 100%, Siteground - 99.9%, Rackspace - 100%, Linode - 99.9%, Site5 - 99.99%, Softlayer - 100%, Firehost - 100%, LiquidWeb - 100%, 1and1 - 99.99%, FatCow - 99.9%, Dreamhost - 100%, Myhosting - 100%. 99.9% uptime isn't really that good, it means 43 minutes of downtime per month. We believe that everything above 99.950% is good, above 99.970% - excellent. Based on that, 'Pingoscope Good Choice Award' goes to WebHostingHub, Linode, MediaTemple and HostGator. Site5, OVH, Rackspace, Softlayer, FireHost, Hetzner and Server4You get 'Pingoscope Excellent Choice Award'.

Pingoscope Hosting Rankings - December 2012

by Administrator3. January 2013 14:58

This is monthly rankings of reliability of hosting companies' websites. Everybody wants his web sites to be up all the time. Sadly but that's not always the case. Most of the reliability comes from the hosting company, we give you the rating where you can see what hosting companies are solid as a rock and what companies are far from it.

Of course you can say that checking company's site isn't the same thing as checking clients of the company. But usually hosters run their sites using their own infrastructure, at least large ones. So if hosting company's website fails couple times a month, it's unlikely you can count for better service for your own sites.

And even if hoster didn't provide you with 100% uptime, it doesn't mean you've been deceived. Most of the hosting companies guarantee at least 99.9% - 99.95% uptime, and 99.9% means your site can be down for more than 40 minutes a month.
